It was apparent that there was a lack of good quality learning opportunities for the primary care physician. Little was provided by the usual societies for the GP and their team, and so the decision was taken to offer teaching and training to help GPs with this unmet need. The teaching is accredited by the CPD Service.
Led by Dr Alun Davies, the courses are written and delivered by a faculty of GPs, NHS and private consultants, academics with specialist research backgrounds in obesity and metabolic disease, and experienced clinicians with active weight management practices. Every contributor is free from pharmaceutical sponsorship, ensuring the content is unbiased, evidence-based, and built entirely around what is best for your patients.

Dr Alun Davies is one of the UK's leading voices in obesity medicine and primary care weight management. He has played an instrumental role in shaping national policy, contributing to NICE guideline development and working directly with regulatory bodies to help write the licences for several landmark weight loss and diabetes medications — including the GLP-1 and dual agonist agents now transforming clinical practice.
His industry career spans senior roles at three of the world's foremost pharmaceutical companies — Amgen, Eli Lilly, and Novo Nordisk — including time at Novo Nordisk's global headquarters in Copenhagen. This breadth of experience gives him a uniquely informed perspective on the evidence base, the regulatory landscape, and the real-world clinical application of obesity pharmacotherapy.
Alun is the founder of Weight Loss Wales, Wales' first private obesity service that was fully accredited as an online clinic and has helped hundreds of patients achieve meaningful, sustained weight loss. He is a GP with extensive experience in sports medicine including professional sport and at the Olympic Games — a background that informs his deep understanding of exercise physiology, metabolic health, and behaviour change.
In academia, Alun serves as Programme Director for the Masters course in Clinical Weight Management at the University of South Wales — one of the few postgraduate programmes of its kind in the UK. He brings this same rigour and clinical depth to the Primary Care Obesity Society courses, ensuring every delegate leaves with the knowledge and confidence to transform their practice.
"There is a huge unmet need in primary care. GPs want to help their patients with obesity but have been given very little support to do so. These courses exist to change that."
